Anthony and Cleopatra. One of the greatest love stories of all time. A twisted tale of passion, power and blood. I had super-high expectations as everything Egyptian; their grandeur, gruesomeness and general gold-ness is something i've always loved. So when the lights dimmed signalling the beginning of the production and a few (albeit gorgeous) lanterns were lowered, I thought....erm.....where the hell's the bling?!
Kim Cattrall appeared slowly from the floor. All I could imagine was her as Samantha squealing in that blooming sex swing.
She roared about 'her Anthony' for a while and he made his grand entrance. Now I know Mr Pennington is a theatre veteran and high-respected actor etc etc, but he was waaay too old to play her lover. His long flowing white locks just freaked me the funk out. When he started thrusting at her, I crumbled into a very immature giggling fit..
Chichester Festival Theatre was as gorgeous as normal, except as soon as i'd been served my wine I had to strategically pour it into a plastic cup. I spilled some. Unhappy face.
Overall, a few confusing costume choices, peculiar casting, poor props and devastating wine spillage.
Kim Cattrall is still a fox though!
